Home/Residential HVAC/Boilers & Hydronic Heating

Boiler & hydronic service

Hot-water heat.
Diagnosed correctly.

EMH Mechanical repairs and replaces residential boilers, hydronic systems and radiant floor heating. We check the boiler, pumps, controls, zoning, water pressure and piping before recommending the next step.

Start with circulation

A boiler can run while part of the house stays cold.

Hot-water heat depends on more than the boiler. Water must move through the right zone at the correct temperature and pressure.

A failed pump, closed or stuck valve, control problem, trapped air or piping issue can keep heat from reaching the space. We diagnose the system before deciding what needs to be repaired.

Residential boiler work

Service for the boiler and the system connected to it.

Repair, replacement and hydronic work for baseboard, radiator, radiant and multi-zone residential heating systems.

01

Boiler Diagnosis

Testing of ignition, safeties, pumps, controls, pressure, temperature and circulation problems.

02

Boiler Repair

Repair of serviceable boiler components and related hydronic controls when parts are available.

03

Boiler Replacement

Replacement planned around the home's heat loss, radiation, venting, piping and control needs.

04

Condensing Boilers

High-efficiency boiler installation with correct venting, combustion air and condensate drainage.

05

Circulator Pumps

Pump diagnosis and replacement, along with checks for flow, air and operating conditions.

06

Zone Valves & Controls

Thermostats, relays, zone valves and control work for systems that heat separate areas.

07

Expansion & Air Control

Expansion tanks, fill valves, pressure-reducing valves, air separators and system-pressure concerns.

08

Hydronic Piping

Piping changes and corrections when included in the repair, replacement or installation scope.

Boiler system options

The equipment must match the water temperature and radiation.

01 / Conventional Boilers

A practical replacement when the existing system supports it.

Conventional boilers can fit many existing baseboard and radiator systems. Chimney condition, draft, combustion air, piping and control setup still need to be reviewed before equipment is selected.

02 / Condensing Boilers

High efficiency with different venting and drainage requirements.

Condensing boilers use approved venting and produce condensate. Their efficiency depends partly on operating water temperature, so the existing radiation and control strategy matter.

03 / Zoning & Controls

Heat delivered where the thermostat is actually calling.

Pumps, zone valves, relays and outdoor-reset controls can change how a hydronic system operates. The control layout should be planned around the piping and the way the home is divided.

Proper boiler selection

The old boiler size is not automatically the right replacement size.

Boilers are often found oversized for the home. We consider the heating load, radiation, design water temperature, domestic hot-water requirements when applicable and the way the system is zoned.

The goal is dependable heat without installing more capacity than the building and distribution system need.

Discuss Boiler Options

Repair or replace?

Start with the condition of the boiler and the cost of the repair.

Repair the Boiler

When the failure is serviceable and the system is still worth fixing.

Many boiler problems can be repaired. We look at the failed part, heat exchanger, venting, controls, system pressure and overall condition before making a recommendation.

  • The heat exchanger is in acceptable condition
  • The failed component can be replaced
  • The repair is reasonable for the boiler's age
  • The rest of the hydronic system is serviceable
Consider Replacement

When a major repair puts too much money into a failing system.

Replacement may be the better use of money when the boiler is leaking, unsafe, difficult to support or has several problems beyond the immediate failure.

  • The heat exchanger or block is leaking
  • Safe venting cannot be maintained
  • Parts are obsolete or unavailable
  • Breakdowns and repair costs are increasing

Radiant floor heating

Heat delivered evenly from the floor up.

Hydronic radiant floor systems circulate heated water through tubing installed below or within the finished floor. Instead of pushing hot air through ductwork, the floor becomes the heat source and warms the space evenly from below.

Radiant floor heat works well in new homes, additions, garages, pole barns and other projects where the tubing can be planned before the concrete or finished floor is installed. Proper loop layout, spacing, insulation, manifolds, zoning, water temperature and controls all affect how the system performs.

Discuss Radiant Floor Heat

Pumps, zones and controls

The boiler makes heat. The hydronic system has to move it.

Circulator pumps, zone valves, relays and thermostats work together to send hot water where it is needed. A problem in one part of that control sequence can leave a zone cold even when the boiler fires.

We trace the call for heat and check circulation, pressure and temperature before replacing components.

Boiler replacement process

Planned around the entire hot-water heating system.

  1. 01

    Evaluate

We review the boiler, radiation, piping, pumps, zoning, controls, venting and installation space.

  2. 02

    Build the Options

Equipment and scope are selected around the home, operating temperatures and budget.

  3. 03

    Schedule

We confirm equipment, access, timing and any work that must be completed by others.

  4. 04

    Install

The old boiler is removed and the new equipment, piping, controls, venting and drainage are completed.

  5. 05

    Startup

We fill and purge the system, operate the zones and check the completed installation.

Residential installation warranty

12 years of transferable labor coverage.

Qualifying residential boiler installations include EMH Mechanical's transferable 12-year labor warranty. If the homeowner sells, the coverage can stay with the home under the warranty terms.

Boiler & hydronic questions

Useful information before the service call.

If the boiler is leaking heavily, smoking, sparking or you smell gas, shut it down when safe to do so and contact the proper emergency service or utility first.

What boiler and hydronic systems does EMH Mechanical service?+

We work on many residential hot-water boiler systems, including conventional and high-efficiency boilers, circulator pumps, zone valves, controls, expansion tanks, air separators and related piping. Equipment and parts availability vary by brand and age.

Why is one boiler zone not heating?+

Common causes include a failed thermostat, zone valve, circulator or control, air trapped in the piping, low system pressure or a flow restriction. The system needs to be tested to determine where circulation or control is being lost.

When should a residential boiler be replaced?+

Replacement may make sense when the heat exchanger is leaking or unsafe, repair parts are no longer available, breakdowns are becoming frequent or the repair cost is too high for the condition of the system. Age alone does not make the decision.

Do you install high-efficiency condensing boilers?+

Yes. When the application supports it, we install high-efficiency boiler systems with the required venting, combustion air, condensate drainage, controls and piping. The radiation and water-temperature requirements must be considered before selecting equipment.

Can you repair boiler pumps, zone valves and controls?+

Yes. We diagnose and replace many common hydronic components, including circulators, zone valves, relays, transformers, aquastats and thermostats. We also check the operating conditions that may have contributed to the failure.

Do you work on radiant floor heating?+

Yes. EMH Mechanical provides hydronic and radiant heating work when the system and project fall within our scope. That may include boilers, pumps, controls, manifolds, zoning and system piping.

Where do you provide residential boiler service?+

Our primary territory includes Northern Oakland County, Northern Macomb County, St. Clair County, Genesee County and Lapeer County. Call with the property address so we can confirm availability.
