Start with the complaint

Dust, dry air and stale rooms do not have the same fix.

Indoor air quality equipment works best when it is selected for a specific problem.

A thicker filter may help with airborne particles, but it cannot add fresh air or correct low winter humidity. A humidifier can add moisture, but it will not fix poor exhaust or a restricted return duct.

Capture particles from air that passes through the HVAC system.

Filter performance depends on the media, filter area, cabinet fit, airflow and how often the system runs. The filter cannot clean air that never reaches the return duct.

02 / Humidity

Add controlled moisture during dry heating-season conditions.

A whole-home humidifier uses the central HVAC system to distribute moisture. The setting may need to change as outdoor temperatures drop to prevent window condensation.

03 / Ventilation

Exchange stale indoor air for planned outdoor air.

ERV and fresh-air systems address air exchange. They must be balanced with exhaust equipment, the HVAC system and the way the house is built.

What indoor air quality equipment does EMH Mechanical install?+

Our residential work includes whole-home humidifiers, filter-rack upgrades, high-capacity media filters, air-cleaning equipment and controlled fresh-air or ERV systems. The right option depends on the complaint, the existing HVAC system and the available installation space.

Can a better filter reduce airflow?+

Yes. A filter with more resistance can reduce airflow when the filter cabinet, return ductwork or blower cannot support it. We look at filter size, system pressure and equipment setup before recommending an upgrade.

How often should an HVAC filter be changed?+

There is no single schedule for every house. Filter type, equipment runtime, pets, construction dust and household conditions all affect how quickly a filter loads. Check it regularly and follow the equipment or filter manufacturer’s instructions rather than waiting for airflow to drop.

Will a whole-home humidifier help during a Michigan winter?+

A correctly sized and operating humidifier can help control dry winter air, but it must be matched to the home and HVAC system. Water supply, drainage, controls, duct location and regular maintenance are all part of a dependable installation.

Why do my windows sweat when the humidifier is running?+

Condensation usually means the indoor moisture level is too high for the outdoor temperature or the window surface temperature. Humidifier settings often need to be lowered during colder weather. Building conditions and ventilation can also affect the problem.

What is the difference between an ERV and an air filter?+

A filter removes particles from air moving through the HVAC system. An ERV exchanges stale indoor air with controlled outdoor air while transferring some heat and moisture between the two air streams. They solve different problems and may be used together.

Does EMH Mechanical perform mold or environmental testing?+

We inspect the HVAC equipment, filters, accessible ductwork, humidity controls and mechanical ventilation. Environmental sampling, mold identification and medical air-quality testing are separate services that may require a qualified testing company.
