The building, equipment data and installation conditions matter more than a broad efficiency claim or advertised operating temperature.
What is the difference between a heat pump and a mini-split?+
A heat pump moves heat in either direction to provide heating and cooling. A mini-split is one type of heat pump system that does not require traditional ductwork. Heat pumps can also be connected to a ducted air handler or used with a furnace in a dual-fuel system.
Will a heat pump work during a Michigan winter?+
Cold-climate heat pumps can operate at low outdoor temperatures, but capacity and efficiency change as the temperature drops. Equipment selection, the home’s heat loss and the backup-heat plan all need to be reviewed before deciding how the system should be used.
Does every heat pump need backup heat?+
Not every application is the same. Some homes use electric backup heat, some use a furnace as part of a dual-fuel system and some ductless applications serve only part of the home. We determine the backup requirement from the equipment, building and intended use.
Where does a ductless mini-split work well?+
Common applications include additions, sunrooms, finished garages, workshops, older homes without usable ductwork, upstairs rooms and areas that remain uncomfortable with the central system.
Can one outdoor mini-split unit serve several rooms?+
A multi-zone outdoor unit can serve multiple indoor units when the equipment is selected and piped for that arrangement. Room layout, load, line-set length and available equipment combinations determine whether a multi-zone system is the right choice.
Can EMH Mechanical repair an existing mini-split?+
Yes. We diagnose electrical, control, airflow, drainage and refrigerant-system problems on serviceable ductless and heat pump equipment. Parts availability and manufacturer support can affect the repair options on older systems.
